Unorthodox: The Real Scoop

Dr. Zalman Newfield joins us via Zoom (Meeting ID #992 7938 9717; call in 929-205-6099; password provided upon request to the  synagogoue office 216.831.6555) to talk about the Haredi (Ultra-Orthodox) Community and the popular Netflix series. He will share his story, reflect on what the series got right and what it portrays wrong, and answer questions.

Dr. Newfield is a professor of sociology at CUNY who focuses on people who leave the Hassidic and other Haredi communities. His new book is Degrees of Separation: Identity Formation While Leaving Ultra-Orthodox Judaism. Dr. Newfield himself grew up as a Lubavitcher (Chabad) in Crown Heights and left the Hassidic community, so this is his journey as well.
