WORDS FROM
CANTOR ALYSSA ROSENBAUM

Hebrew may be lashon hakodesh, the holy tongue, but it is music which speaks to our very souls and which best expresses the deepest prayers of our hearts. The melodies we use in the synagogue are what bring the texts to life and greatly enrich our experience of being in a communal Jewish space. Whether you are new to the BJC community or have a family that has been part of our community for multiple generations, it is our hope that being able to listen to and sing along with the melodies used in our services will help you to feel at home here, which is why we want to share them with you. You can use these recordings to become better acquainted with some of the most frequent tunes used throughout our services and even learn how to daven parts of them yourself as a layleader. If you would like to bolster your abilities for reading Torah and Haftarah, there are trope resources here as well. Synagogue melodies are always a mixture of old and new—the traditions that ground us and the innovations that inspire us!

 Weekday Shacharit

We are proud to be able to provide our community with regular opportunities to engage with Jewish music in the form of concerts. Some of our recent past concerts have included an artist-in-residence weekend with Rabbi Josh Warshawsky, an Israel @ 75 concert, and a Shabbaton Havdalah concert featuring Kyra Goldman. Upcoming concerts will include the Shul Sisters, who will be performing at B'nai Jeshurun on June 2nd.

Our concerts are generously underwritten by The Daniel and Ethel Hamburger Music Fund.

We offer two opportunities for our members to participate in services through our choirs.

Zamir Choir

Our Zamir Children's choir is led by Cantor Alyssa Rosenbaum. The choir features students in grades 1-6. Practices take place during the school year on Tuesday from 4:15-4:45pm, and they typically perform the first Friday of each month between November and May, coinciding with Birthday Shabbat, when we celebrate that month's birthdays of everyone in attendance. This is a great way for children to learn the tunes of the Friday evening service and also have opportunities to have solos and sing with friends.  For more information, contact Cantor Alyssa Rosenbaum.

High Holy Day Choir

Our High Holy Day Choir is directed by Mark Wolinsky and participates in our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. If you would like more information about our choir, contact Cantor Alyssa Rosenbaum

Shabbat Rocks! brings together a live band playing some of today’s most upbeat Jewish music.
Multiple musical genres are woven through the service, highlighting text from each of the Psalms, which creates an energizing and engaging service. Shabbat Rocks! takes place once per month through the summer at 7:00 pm. For those of you that plan to stay at home and enjoy Shabbat Rocks! online, you can click the links below for helpful resources:
