What is a Framework for Excellence School?

The Bessie Hershey Religious School of B'nai Jeshurun Congregation, was the first religious school in Cleveland to be officially named A Framework for Excellence School by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.  This prestigious certification indicated that B'nai Jeshurun's Religious school has complied with rigorous standards in profession development, curriculum development, and family education.  Of the 750 conservative congregations which serve 250,000 Jewish households nationally, only 40 synagogue schools (as of July, 2003) have achieved the Framework for Excellence status.

This designation means that our school has reached the quality standards set for Conservative synagogue schools based on the best practices model of education according to the following benchmarks:

bullet

Skills Mastery and Coordinated Curriculum

bullet

Family Education

bullet

The Relationship of the Clergy to the School

bullet

Teacher Qualifications and Ongoing Professional Development

bullet

Articulated Educational Philosophy

bullet

Assessment

bullet

Effective Education Committee

The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism has additionally reiterated the need for Conservative Jewish Schools to maintain a preferred pattern of religious education based on a minimum of 6-7 hours of on site formal education with a heavy emphasis on attendance at Shabbat services during the formative years leading up to B'nai Mitzvah.  The Bessie Hershey Religious School conforms to this preferred pattern.

The Bessie Hershey Religious School of B'nai Jeshurun Congregation is listed now by United Synagogue as a school to be emulated, and an example of Supplementary Education around the country.  This award is shared by the staff, clergy, and faculty of our school, its Education Committee chaired by Gordon Shefner, and the Board of Trustees of B'nai Jeshurun Congregation.  But most of all. it belongs to the children and families who come through our school doors each Tuesday, Thursday, Shabbat, and Sunday.

Kol hakavod (an honor well deserved) to all of us!  And may we continue to prosper and grow as a model educational institution together.
